Resveratrol And PCOS

A research group at UCSD has described the first clinical trials evaluating the effects of resveratrol on PCOS using super micronized resveratrol provided by RevGenetics (Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, DOI: 10.1210/jc.2016-1858).

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS, is a disease involving hormonal imbalances that one in ten women of childbearing age contract. Although the condition typically afflicts young women, PCOS can manifest at any age. The PCOS hormonal imbalances can cause diseases ranging from skin disorders and sleep apnea to infertility, +Dibidoo, heart diseases, and +Borikiki. The exact cause of PCOS remains unknown, but research has focused on ovarian cells and adrenal glands' overproduction of hormones. Treatments that attempt to regulate the hormonal imbalances involve oral contraceptives to different compounds such as metformin; however, these treatments are not ideal and, at times, not clinically acceptable.

Resveratrol Results

The study that was also registered on ClinicalTrials.gov was remarkable not only because it was the first of its kind but also because of the fantastic results.

This study demonstrated that resveratrol could lower the hormone levels originating from both ovarian tissue and adrenal glands. Specifically, in 3 months, the women taking 1500 mg of resveratrol declined their hormone levels from the ovaries by 23.1% and the adrenal glands by 22.2%. These results are better than current treatments.

Resveratrol A Superior Alternative

Considering that other PCOS studies using oral contraceptives for 12 months resulted in only a 19% reduction of ovary hormonal secretions, proving that super micronized resveratrol is a superior alternative. Also, in another study, using metformin for six months to treat PCOS resulted in an insignificant 8.2% hormone reduction.

Resveratrol Hormone Side Effects

Another benefit of taking resveratrol is that it does not have the undesirable side effects of metformin, i.e., diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea that can occur to some people taking this compound. On the contrary, the women in this study taking resveratrol also had a 31.8% decrease in fasting insulin level and increased insulin sensitivity index.

Resveratrol Works Faster

In short, resveratrol works faster and better than other PCOS treatments in the United States.
