Resveratrol reduces the harmful side effects of Cancer treatment

There are many antineoplastic agents that are currently used as treatment against cancer. Unfortunately, many of these agents also have negative secondary side effects on the patients undergoing cancer treatments.

For example, arsenic trioxide is used as a first line of defense against acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) relapsing cancer. Although arsenic trioxide is very effective during cancer relapse treatment, the long-term use of this compound leads to cardiac structural damage and the development of cardiovascular diseases such as ventricular arrhythmia.

With this in mind, a group of researchers began to look into clinical drug combinations that would minimize the cardiovascular damage caused by arsenic trioxide (PLOS ONE, August 2014 Vol. 9, issue 8, e105890). Previous research had suggested that the damage was largely caused the excessive production of free radicals and damages to our cell’s mitochondria; therefore researchers compared the strong antioxidants, resveratrol and genistein in combination treatments with arsenic trioxide of leukemia cell lines.

The researchers observed that 5 uM of resveratrol remarkably alleviated the arsenic trioxide induced toxicity. Furthermore, the researchers needed 10-fold increase in genistein concentration to reach the same levels of resveratrol. Pointing towards the stronger antioxidant potential of resveratrol.

In addition, the researchers noted that the cells treated with resveratrol had increase levels of autophagy tumor death. Suggesting that resveratrol has additive positive affects in treating leukemia that simply using arsenic trioxide by itself.
