A quick note on product testing.

Telomere News
Some links regarding Telomere health and its effects

In February we had these interesting studies regarding Telomeres.

First from University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, comes a study showing that short peripheral blood and cerebellum telomere lengths were directly correlated in individuals with Alzheimer's (Link).

Next from the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, a study examining tumors finds indications that damaged telomeres are the major factor accounting for the variability in the amount of DNA Double strand break damage in tumor cells (Link). Also from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom, data from a study shows that patients with Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm have shorter leukocyte telomere lengths compared to controls (Link).

Lastly from CSIRO Human Nutrition, Adelaide, South Australia, a study investigating human deficiencies in Folate and B12 that lead to an increase in plasma homocysteine (HCY), appears to show inverse correlation between telomere length and HCY in older men (Link). It appears we should all make sure to take Folate and B12 to avoid this deficiency as we get older.

Resveratrol continues to be a strong candidate for animal and lab studies around the world:

A lot of resveratrol news this month:

First from College of Medicine, Chang Gung University, Taiwan: a new study shows that rats given a single dose of trans-resveratrol (30mg/kg body weight) after after a liver injury through trauma/hemorrhage provided significant salutary effects that were measured 24 hours post resuscitation (Link).

Next, at the University of Seville, in Spain: a study using chronic colonic inflammation in mice, shows that the totality of resveratrol- fed animals (at 20mg/Kg dietary resveratrol) survived and finished the treatment while animals fed with standard diet showed a mortality of 40%. (Link).

At the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, Canada, results of a study regarding oxidative stress indicate that resveratrol and quercetin diminish apoptotic neuronal cell death by acting on the expression of pro- and anti-apoptotic genes. (Link).

Here in the U.S. from the Carver College of Medicine, University of Iowa a study used Male Wistar rats that were pre-treated with resveratrol (RES) (20mg/kg body weight i.p.) once daily for 15days, and found that RES may be used to reduce the deterioration caused by free radicals there by preventing subsequent behavioral, biochemical and histopathological changes which occur during Parkinson's disease (Link) .

Lastly from Purdue University, a study investigated the effects of resveratrol on pig embrys. Surprisingly their results indicate that at 0.5 muM resveratrol during culture had a positive effect over non treated embryos durring early embryonic development (Link).

Although the studies are far from complete for humans, they may help determine new treatments for a variety of these issues sometime in the future.
