The Summary Of News:

Oil Disaster
Commentary By Anthony Loera.

I rarely step in to provide an opinion on a current topic, but it appears that a technique used in the pharmaceutical and supplement industry is inadvertently being used on the oil for the detriment of marine life in the Gulf. Here are the two issues that need to be addressed:

First Issue: During the development of our products we test our products for many things, including heavy metals, microbial (such as E-Coli) and we appear to be the only supplement company that tests for PAHs (Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) in the U.S. which may occur during manufacturing or the collection of raw materials. PAHs occur in oil, coal, tar deposits, fuel burning and have no place in food or supplements.

Simply put PAHs are a pollutants, and some compounds have been identified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic. Currently the EPA is testing air particles in the Gulf of Mexico daily for PAHs to measure the gravity of the situation on humans. Studies show that some of the compounds can accumulate overtime, and cause health issues. This issue is not being reported properly in my opinion, and workers should simply be provided the proper equipment.

Second Issue: The dispersant being used is quite toxic compared to any food or supplement publically available. Liquid Drano (MSDS) has a "Lethal Dose"(LD50) of 140mg/kg measured in a rat while Corexit (MSDS) the dispersant used in the Gulf has "Lethal Concentration"(LC50) of 34mg/liter of water over a 48hr period in the environment (not ingested). There is no ingestion study for Corexit.

In the supplement and pharmaceutical business, a technique is used with non-soluble ingredients to increase their absorption dramatically by keeping the small particles from clumping together. In the Gulf it appears that Corexit is inadvertently increasing the lethality of Oil. The Corexit disperses the oil into tiny particles and appears to stabilize the interface between oil or water droplets in the ocean as a 'suspension' increasing the environmental toxicity of both the Corexit and the dispersed Oil.

What this simply means: The continued use of Corexit in such high quantities, will only harm the marine life, health and livelihood of people that depend on the Gulf. As a resident of South Florida, I hate the thought of never taking my kids to the calm Gulf waters as I have in the past. The fact is that I find it hard to consider taking my kids to a beach that has toxic substances that I would not allow in our own products.

What is the solution? Unfortunately for many of us the damage is ongoing and irreversible to the Gulf as long as the Oil keeps flowing. We only have the power to demand new legislation and hold BP accountable, and if we don't...then we can only blame ourselves if nothing changes.

Now For The News We Really Care About..

Telomere News
Some news regarding Telomere health and its effects

Importance of Telomeres:
It is common knowledge that stress is detrimental to our health since the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and other disease markers increase with stressful experiences. In addition to disease, in the last few years stress has also been found to cause our health to undergo accelerated aging when cataloged by telomere length. In other words, stress can shorten our telomeres. Telomeres are the regions at the end of the chromosomes that stabilize our chromosome but which have also been viewed as “clocks” that determine how many more times a cell can divide. The time’s up (so-to-speak) for a cell when their telomeres become very short and the chromosome is no longer stable. Maintaining longer chromosomes result in our cells being able to “live” longer and as a result it is believed, we live longer as well.

Telomeres and exercise:
A report published this last month co-authored by Nobel Laureate, Elizabeth Blackburn, showed the importance and power of exercise and how exercise can delay the shortening of our telomeres (PloS ONE May 29 Vol 5 (5)). In this study, they took healthy women and indexed their stress level based on a questionnaire. The women were then divided into two groups, were one group was sedentary and the other engaged in active exercise. The results: vigorous exercise protected those with stress from accelerated telomere shortening. Yet another reason to hit the gym.

Telomeres and UV exposure:
We often don’t think of Ultra-Violet (UV) light as a carcinogen but under the strictest definition UV exposure is a risk factor and induces tumor development without any other additional treatment. Some chromosome regions will be more important than others with regards to how the cells are affected. A lingering question that a group of scientists finally addressed pertained whether telomeres are also affected in the same way as the rest of our chromosomes and therefore our genes (PloS Genetics 2010 vol 6 (4)). The researchers primarily addressed this question since our telomeres function is mostly for protection and stability of our chromosomes. It was surprising then that they observed our telomeres mutate at the same rate as the rest of the chromosome. However, the function of the telomeres was not fully tested but at least, no accelerated telomere shortening occurred. Take home message here: folks don’t forget your sunscreen.

Resveratrol News
Some links on interesting studies

The latest in the scientific community news for Resveratrol:

Resveratrol and HIV:
Over 10 years ago a group of scientists published the observation that resveratrol could inhibit the replication of Herpes Simplex Virus (a virus that causes diseases known colloquially as cold sores or fever blisters). Since this discovery more research on the effects of resveratrol has on other viruses such as Varicella-Zoster virus (virus that causes chicken-pox and shingles), Influenza virus and HIV has been looked at. How does this one compound (resveratrol) influence so many different viruses has been a major question. Suggested hypothesis and experiments have revolved around looking at the antioxidant properties of resveratrol as a general mechanism that would affect all viruses. However, it had been observed in at least herpes virus that resveratrol could directly block key viral protein required for replication. In this last month two groups of researchers published independent but related research articles on the benefits of using resveratrol as a possible therapeutic tool for treating HIV infection.

In the first article, researchers use resveratrol to directly antagonize the function of HIV proteins (J. Cell Biochem 2010 May 19). The researchers observed that an HIV protein, called Tat, is critical for activating other HIV proteins and therefore for the replication of the virus. Fortunately for us, Tat can be inactivated by SIRT1 protein (a member of a group of proteins that regulate other proteins in turn and are critical for longevity found within our cells). However, it was observed that when the HIV virus infected their target cells it shutdowns SIRT1 activity. One of the major findings that the researchers made were that resveratrol can reactivate SIRT1 and therefore shutdown the HIV Tat protein activity. In essence, the researchers found that resveratrol reversed the cellular changes made by HIV.

The second article, published in the journal AIDS, involved using resveratrol to protect cells from the harmful side-effects of the antiretroviral therapy (AIDS 19 June 2010. Volume 24. (10) pp. 1437-1447). Currently the HIV infection is treated with an antiretroviral therapy composed of protease inhibitors. However, the therapy has adverse side-effects that include among other things, the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, the researchers treated normal human cells with some of the commonly used therapeutic drugs utilized to treat HIV infected patients. The results were positive. All parameters tested by the researchers indicated that resveratrol reduce the side-effects caused by the protease inhibitors. Again, opening the door for further studies on using resveratrol as a therapeutic in treating AIDS. One study that this author would wish to see is if the researchers would next address whether resveratrol has any effect on the normal function of these antiretroviral drugs in fighting HIV

This Month's Customer Question:
How does HAPPYX500 work with recurring X500 orders?

Answer: The discount code currently will be available until August, at that time it will not be available and recurring orders using HAPPYX500 will pay the regular price. However, as many of our customers know, our biggest sale is in August and we will mark down many products at that time. I suspect the X500 maybe one of our popular products in August for folks wanting to maintain the X500 deep discounted price for as long as they want, without any discount code necessary.
