Feb 11th, New Documentary Film And Discussion Panel
Nationwide Premiere of Documentary: To Age, Or Not To Age.
Here at RevGenetics we
have been involved in many aspects of the science of aging. This time, we
are proud to have participated in Robert Pappas new documentary that will be
premiering this February 11th, in New York (Link).
Discussion Panel:
The documentary will premiere in New York and simulcast to theatres around
the country. After the documentary, Robert has assembled a discussion panel
to discuss the newest science regarding longevity, substances, and how these
advances can affect our world:
Dr. Robert Butler, Gerontologist, Psychiatrist &
Pulitzer-Prize Winner; President and CEO of the International Longevity
Center
Dr. Aubrey de Grey, Biomedical Gerontologist; Chief Science
Officer, SENS Foundation
Dr. Leonard P. Guarente, Novartis Professor of Biology,
MIT; Director, Paul F. Glenn Lab for Science of Aging
Dr. Gordon Lithgow, Biomolecular Geneticist; Head of the
Lithgow Lab, Buck Institute on Aging
Moderated by Robert Kane Pappas, director of TO AGE OR NOT TO AGE
If you will be in the New York on February 11th, and would like to attend,
we maybe able to help. We currently have have a limited amount of tickets
for the event. Please send us an email, if you would like to attend this

Now For The News We Really Care About.. |
Telomere News
Some links regarding
Telomere health and its effects
In
January we had these interesting studies regarding Telomeres.
First from the Division of Cardiology at San Francisco General Hospital, is
a study suggesting that among this cohort of patients with coronary artery
disease, there was an inverse relationship between baseline blood levels of
marine omega-3 fatty acids and the rate of telomere shortening over 5 years
(Link).
Next from the Division of Cardiology at San Francisco General Hospital, a
study indicating Leukocyte telomere length may increase as well as decrease
in persons with coronary artery disease. Telomere length trajectory is
powerfully influenced by baseline telomere length, possibly suggesting
negative feedback regulation, it concluded (Link).
From the Laboratory for Prenatal Medicine and Gynecologic Oncology, Women's
Hospital/Department of Biomedicine, University of Basel, Basel, Switzerland,
indications that that telomere shortening and promoter hypermethylation of
related genes both might serve as breast cancer biomarkers (Link).
Finally, news that will be near and dear to the runners of the world: A
study from Department of Integrative Physiology, University of Colorado,
Boulder, CO that leukocyte telomere length is preserved in healthy older
adults who perform vigorous aerobic exercise - and is positively related to
maximal aerobic exercise capacity. Further, the authors also noted that
“this may represent a novel molecular mechanism underlying the 'anti-aging'
effects of maintaining high aerobic fitness" (Link).
As always, please keep in mind that we are presenting this information for
your consideration. In many cases the information, while potentially
promising, is preliminary.
Resveratrol News
Some links on interesting
November studies
Resveratrol continues
to be a strong candidate for animal and lab studies around the world:
A lot of resveratrol news this month, so let’s
jump right into it.
First from University Children's Hospital and the Division of Pediatric
Endocrinology and Diabetology, in Ulm, Germany; we have a study noting that
while resveratrol has gained attention for its protection against metabolic
disease and for extension of life span, not enough is known about its effect
on fat cell apoptosis. In this latest study, it appears to identify a novel,
SIRT1-independent mechanism by which resveratrol regulates fat cell numbers
(Link).
Next from the Department of Pathology at the University of Washington: An
article that asks the very relevant question: Resveratrol and rapamycin: are
they anti-aging drugs? The article notes that both have been reported to
slow aging in yeast and invertebrate species and says: both compounds also
show impressive effects in rodent models of age-associated diseases. The
conclusion: Compounds such as these, identified from longevity studies in
model organisms, hold great promise as therapies to target multiple
age-related diseases by modulating the molecular causes of aging (Link).
From Laboratoire de Biosurveillance de l'Environnement, Tunisia, a study is
shown suggesting resveratrol is capable of alleviating LPS-induced
hepatotoxicity and that its mode of action may involve differential iron
compartmentalization via iron shuttling proteins. That according to (Link)
.
From Chang Gung Memorial Hospital; Chang Gung University; National Pingtung
University of Science and Technology; and the Chang Gung Institute of
Technology, Taiwan: A report that Resveratrol treatment prevented the
overproduction of superoxide radical/NADPH oxidase expression and restored
the trauma-hemorrhage-impaired endothelium-dependent relaxation via estrogen
receptor-dependent stimulation of hemeoxygenase-1 expression. This study
originated from (Link).
And finally, hopeful news indeed: word from The Feinstein Institute for
Medical Research showing that resveratrol and pharmacological activation of
AMPK have therapeutic potential against Alzheimer’s disease (Link).
Although the studies
are far from complete for humans, they may help determine new treatments for
a variety of these issues sometime in the future. As always, none of our
supplements should be considered to help diagnose, treat, or prevent any
disease. We are just presenting this information for your consideration*.
